Belinda Carlisle stopped by for an interview with Craig Ferguson the other night to plug the Regeneration Tour and sing "Heaven is a Place on Earth." Belinda is part of a concert line-up that rekindles the nostalgia for 80's pop music with other acts like ABC, A Flock of Seagulls and The Human League.
First, I must point out that this woman is about to be 50 next month. And while it's possible she's starting to look like the long lost sister of Janice Dickinson because of a few too many trips to the "spa," I think she still looks and sounds great. Second, her chat with Craig is very amusing, at least to me, because I always think she's just a little bit crazy- my kind of crazy. For example, the topics of earthquakes, aliens, the mistreatment of donkeys and a diet of baguettes and butter were all mentioned within the span of 3 minutes. That's quite a bit of territory to cover. Can you imagine having a conversation with her over dinner? And when questioned about how she stays so trim despite the staples of the baguette/butter diet, Belinda responded in her typically evasive fashion, "You know....whatever."

Happy Birthday Belinda Carlisle!

If ever there was a patron saint of the Lost in TV blog it certainly would be Belinda Carlisle. Belinda is considered a hero here at Lost in TV HQ (considering the late 80's/early 90's revival happening here at the HQ, those "Live Your Life Be Free" and "Runaway Horses" CD's better not wear out any time soon), so the billboard at the of the blog has been changed in honor of her 49th birthday.
Belinda will join the rest of the Go-Go's this October for a limited concert series in Anaheim, San Francisco, Reno, and Las Vegas.
Because it's Belinda's birthday, Lost in TV HQ presents a few items from the multimedia scrapbook. Enjoy!

Hangin' with Belinda Carlisle on VH1

Belinda Carlisle appeared on VH1 last weekend on Hangin' with Belinda Carlisle to discuss her new album, "Voila." VH1 Classic's Eddie Trunk did a great interview with Belinda and asked her about living in France, what inspired her to sing an album of chanson entirely in French, the highs and lows of being lead singer for The Go-Go's, and whether or not she plans to tour with "Voila." This segment was about 20 minutes long and through the magic of editing, I've distilled it into just over 9 minutes of video for the Lost in TV Video Vault.
"Voila" is such an unexpected surprise, and I absolutely love it. Belinda's last record, "A Woman and a Man" was very adult-contempory, and while there were some outstanding tracks like "In too Deep," "California," and "Always Breaking my Heart" it wasn't difficult to see Belinda setting a course directly into lite-FM. "Voila" was an artist's challenge, and Belinda rose to the occasion by improving her French speaking skills, perfecting pronunciation, and selecting a series of songs that were truly meaningful to her. Belinda mentions in the VH1 interview that the songs transcend the lyrics and you don't need to understand the French language in order to feel the emotion of the songs. I agree. Belinda sang her heart out and the emotion translates through the music and the quality of her voice.
My only complaint with this interview is that the broadcast didn't include samples of the tracks on "Voila." If you are interested, though, you are not out of luck. iTunes carries all of the songs from "Voila," including four bonus songs that Belinda recorded in English. My favorites? Thank you for asking! "La vie en rose," "Jezebel," and "I Still Love Him."
1. Ma jeunesse fout le camp
2. Bonnie et Clyde
3. Avec le temps
4. Sous le ciel de Paris
5. Des ronds dans l'eau
6. Pourtant tu m'aimes
7. Ne me quitte pas
8. La vie en rose
9. Contact
10. Merci cherie
11. Jezebel
12. I Still Love Him
13. La vie en rose (English Version)
14. Bonnie and Clyde
15. If You Go Away
I would love to see Belinda on tour with this material. I've never been able to get to one of her solo shows, but I have seen The Go-Go's a number of times on their infamous summer tours. Belinda mentioned that she intends to go on the road in Europe and possibly return to the U.S. near the end of the year.

Belinda Carlisle is back with "Voila," her first new album in nearly a decade. Best known for lead-singer duties in The Go-Go's and the power-pop music of her solo career, "Voila
" features a new musical direction for Belinda as the album was recorded entirely in French. Perhaps it was a combination of living the last 14 years in the south of France and bottles of really good wine that caused Belinda to develop a fascination with French chansons and pop music of the 50's and 60's. She worked extensively with a language tutor in preparation for recording which I can see why when she's singing songs like "La Vie en Rose" and "Ma Jeunesse Fout Le Camp." And speaking of recording, Belinda worked with an surprising group of musicians on this one- Brian Eno and Fianchna O'Braonain (Hot House Flowers)- just to name a few.
Meanwhile, there's a great quote in Newsweek where Belinda reveals the real secret behind the music.
Interviewer: You've got the whole smoky, sultry chanteuse thing going on.
Belinda: That's from years of cigarettes and booze.
HAHAHA! Keep reading for a sneak peak of "Voila" and a few photos that have forced me to make a comparison to the last time Belinda was obsessed with all things French...
Here's a little YouTube preview of "Voila":
After a tour through Belinda's MySpace page, I couldn't help but think that the companion photos to "Voila" were similar to promotional shots she took back in the early 90's for her album "Live Your Life Be Free." Coincidentally, that album also had a bit of a French vibe where she did a series of 60's-inspired beauty shots.
